European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
