The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the nation's leader began displaying everyone his plans for a lavish reception room twice the size of the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to construct it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of deaths from his cuts to international aid stands at 600,000 and rising, and recently a study predicted his energy policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have dared – truly, no former commander would have imagined – independently wrecking major areas of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with the government.

As disorienting as it is to observe the leader try to upend the old idea of democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of hostility who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this change developed at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and because the fastest-growing cadre of Americans could have minimal awareness about him because they identify as non-believers or doubters or nones. Jesus' answer to violence is to turn the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a way to educate the assailant; his crime policy states that when someone steals your jacket you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.
The evident and clear fact that the Jesus of the gospels requests a type of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished is what has always made Christianity something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness requiring to be contained. During the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Highest Within Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has been great solace to help build the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in large quantities in interim political contests. We shall require to continue it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners throughout each rally and calls to the highest qualities in US history.

The country is optimally secured, in other words, through connection to the best within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected through connection to elements that cause it to be special and beautiful, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it mean acting as if the most damaging regarding America and Christianity never occurred; it signifies both meekness and belief, a combination that committed US believers should embrace.
